Jim, known in the States as "Very Reliable Operator" (WB7VRO) or in Chile as "Bravo Para Comer" in Spanish or "Big Purple Cow" in English (CE3BPC)is a member of the Old Timers Club having received his first license in 1956 while he was in high school. He is active in DX and in 1979 ARRL International DX Contest took First Place High Band Phone Chile and First Place Single Operator Chile.

He is an expert in antennas and transmatches. He has taught numerous novice classes during his many years as a ham.

In 1956, he started out by building his own transmitter with an 807 in the final. He sold newspapers to earn enough money to buy a National 125 receiver. His present day equipment includes a Kenwood TS 50, TS 130 and a Kenwood TS 830 S. His ampliers include a Dentron 160-10L and a Heathkit SB220. His antenna is a Mosely six element yagi at 65 feet. He works most bands, packet and two meters. The Radio Club La Providencia, which Jim is the president, is in the process of setting up a repeater and an emergency system between the USA and Chile in case of natural desasters in Chile. His wife, Lina, is also a ham and her call sign is CE3BYK. Most of her communication is to and between family members.
